Ritsumeikan’s history begins with its establishment as a private academy in 1869 by Prince Kinmochi Saionji, an eminent international statesman of modern Japan and advocate of Freedom and Internationalism. In 1900, Saionji’s protégé Kojuro Nakagawa retained Saionji’s spirit and established the Kyoto Hosei School, an evening law school that was open to working people. With Saionji’s blessing, the name of this school was changed to Ritsumeikan Private University in 1913. At present, the Kinugasa and Suzaku campuses in Kyoto, as well as at the Biwako Kusatsu Campus in Shiga prefecture combined are home to nearly 36,000 students learning under the core educational philosophy of Peace and Democracy. In order to nurture just and ethical global citizens, Ritsumeikan is working to foster creativity and the development of individual talents on a solid foundation of academic achievement.
Additionally, Ritsumeikan has launched its fourth campus, Osaka Ibaraki Campus (OIC), in April of 2015. This urban-style campus is located directly adjacent to the JR rail lines, giving it excellent transportation access. There are 3 graduate schools: Policy Science, Business Administration (Japanese language only), Management (Japanese language only), and Technology Management (Japanese language only).
Recognizing that contemporary issues extend beyond existing fields of research, Ritsumeikan University is actively engaged in producing world-class research and fostering researchers who have the skills to succeed on the world stage. Through multidisciplinary cooperation, a number of RU research projects have been selected as part of the Global COE and 21st Century COE programs, and we work daily to strengthen our network of researchers both in Japan and overseas.
Ritsumeikan University has been selected as designated institution of the "Top Global University Project "by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), Japan. The ministry-appointed panel of experts selected 37 institutions among 104 applications and these institutions hold the status as of October 1st, 2014, to the end of fiscal 2023.
The "Top Global University Project" has been established as a way to give financial support to 37 public and private universities aiming to promote comprehensive internationalization and become world-class research and education institutions. With our selection for this prestigious project, Ritsumeikan University will serve as a model for globalized schools.
Since its establishment in 1950, the Graduate School of Economics at Ritsumeikan University has produced many outstanding graduates who have entered the business world, national and local governments, and various research organizations. Located near Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan, the campus offers a beautiful natural environment along with the highest level of facilities and equipment. Since 2001 the school has offered a program for international students that are taught in English. As of May 2013, the program has received 180 international students from 36 countries. It has proven popular with international students who enjoy taking courses in English in a Japanese academic setting, while working with their academic advisors on the writing and submission of their theses. The Master's Program in Economic Development (MPED), which started in September 2002, offers training in fundamental economics, including Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Econometrics, and Applied Economics, conforming to international standards, and is taught entirely in English. This program accepts students from developing and developed countries who have strong interest in Japanese and Asian economic development and fosters knowledgeable professionals who can lead the international community. The aim of this program is to nurture talented individuals with wide-ranging interests who will become leaders in international society.

A thesis supervisor and sub-supervisor are assigned to each student towards the end of the 2nd semester (around June), based on the research plan submitted by the student. In addition, throughout the two years of study, two or three professors guide the JDS Fellows and their fellow students in the Elementary and Research Seminars. Student Dormitories: 153 single rooms are available in our international student dormitory, the BKC International House, constructed in Sept 2012, adjacent to the BKC Campus.
Rooms are furnished with: bed, desk, chair, internet connection, toilet, sink, refrigerator, and air conditioner. (*Showers in some rooms)
Common areas include: kitchens, showers, coin laundry, study rooms, lobby, and vending machines.
The dormitory features 24-hour English-speaking managers and student Resident Assistants living on each floor, ensuring that even students coming to Japan for the first time can enjoy a worry-free start to their life in Japan.
*It is possible for the University Cooperative’s real estate agency to offer English-language assistance to students who wish to seek alternate accommodation in the local area.

Library Services: BKC is home to two academic information facilities. Academic literature related to science and engineering is found in the Media Center, whereas information related to economics and business administration is found in the Media Library. Both of these facilities are available to students regardless of the research departments to which they belong.

Health Center: Located on campus, the health center promotes the health of students through a combination of general health support services and a medical office that specializes in internal medicine. To ensure their good health, all students must take part in a yearly health check that assesses their overall health condition and, depending on the result, follows up with additional tests as necessary. Students with any persevering health issues are put under watch and given follow up medical guidance until graduation.
Counseling: Professional counseling is available in English or Japanese Monday-Friday.
Training Room: In order to support students from a health perspective, our campus has a training room with the equipment necessary for a healthy workout. Here, we have trainers residing nearby and students can use the gym facilities free of charge.
Restaurant / Cafeteria: We have a combination of several restaurants and cafeterias located on-campus that are designed to provide a variety of meals and double as communication spaces where students can interact with each other as well as with their professors.
Religious and Dietary Considerations Among 7 dining locations on BKC campus exist cafeterias that provide halal food and vegetarian options in an effort to better provide a campus that is prepared to meet the dietary needs of its international population. Moreover, we also provide a room that students can use for prayer.
International Exchange Lounge & International Center: We have set up the lounge as an open area for international exchange where international students can interact with Japanese students and among themselves. Located adjacent to the International Center, the lounge allows students to quickly access information about student support and events targeted at international students and international exchange. Moreover, there are a variety of learning materials and media such as language textbooks and English language newspapers. Currently in the international center at BKC we have 19 full-time staff (1 native English speaker and 1 Chinese native speaker).
Other Support: Ritsumeikan University is establishing the JICA/JDS English Program for JDS Fellows to improve applied English ability at the graduate student level. Additionally, the university strongly encourages JDS Fellows to enroll in the JICA/JDS Support for Daily Conversation in Japanese, which the university intends to establish so that students can adapt smoothly to life in Japan by learning basic conversation skills and hiragana/katakana.
Finally, Ritsumeikan University is planning to conduct programs such as the JICA/JDS Company Visit Program* and Kyoto Cultural Understanding Program* to better meet the needs of JDS Fellows.

We are especially interested in recruiting students from the Bangladesh. Our aim, which we have largely achieved, is to attract succeeding cohorts of students from many countries, with varying work experience, all intent on learning economics and applying it to practical questions, while also experiencing life in Japan. Students from Bangladesh and other nations can help one another to learn and to enjoy the shared experience of expanding their knowledge. The Ritsumeikan University Master‘s Program in Economic Development (MPED) is for all students with high communication skills in English who desire to learn basic economics and apply it to their own specialized fields of study. Economics is a broad discipline that is widely applicable to government policy and business practice. MPED graduates are able to apply economic reasoning to public and private sector decision making. They are able to identify the true effects of policies and persuade others of the correctness of their analysis using empirical evidence and cogent arguments. Applicants should have a desire to use such abilities in their careers for the benefit of society.

When I applied for JDS scholarship, my aim was to enhance my research skills in economics field rather than only mastering theoretical aspects. Ritsumeikan University (RU) seemed just perfect for that goal and now I congratulate myself for selecting this university. The MPED (Masters Program in Policy Development) program of Ritsumeikan University not only covers the traditional theoretical courses of economics but it focuses exclusively on enhancing practical research oriented skills of the students. The entire 2nd year is devoted for finalizing the research proposal with the supervision of professors. So, for those who want to be a good researcher, Ritsumeikan is the best place. From the first semester, the research proposals are fine tuned so that the student gets best opportunity to develop policy recommendation for their country. Though the focus is primarily on research but RU offers many core and elective courses under the guidance of teachers from different countries (from Asia, America and Europe)to strengthen the theoretical background of a student. RU regularly arrange seminars, conferences and statistical and language courses where students get to learn from international experts. I’m very thankful to Japanese government, JICA, Bangladesh Government and JICE for giving me the opportunity to study at this university.
Ritsumeikan has an international campus situated at the top of a beautiful mountain where students from different countries all over the world study together. There are ample opportunities to mix with different cultures and learn new languages and social skills. To me this university has the most beautiful campus among all the universities in Japan. It is one of the top ranked private universities in Japan with excellent facilities like library, internet access throughout the campus and access to many proprietary journals and resources. It has an excellent Gymnasium which is really useful for workout (I lost weight more than 8 KG!!!). There are enormous sports groups for playing Football, Badminton, Tennis and most other popular sports.
The combination of capable teachers, access to enormous learning resources, opportunity to study in a multicultural environment and enjoy the beauty of nature makes Ritsumeikan the ultimate choice for a JDS fellow. I am having a great time here and sure the new students will have a great time too.

Studying in masters program in economic development (MPED) in graduate school of economics, Ritsumeikan university (BKC) gave me an opportunity to broaden my knowledge, ability and communication skills. One had to study very hard to keep good academic records, which was the primary responsibility. Also a sound plan for the proposed research was crucial in the second year. I got classmate from different countries who are now very good friends. We helped each other in study and other activities.
I also visited factories of renowned companies like Toyota, Panasonic, FUJITEC and TOTO. I visited some local festivals like cherry blossom, matsuri (festival in Japanese) in Kyoto and many shrines and temples. It was also an opportunity to learn about Japanese culture and tradition and shared mine with the Japanese friends. I also interacted with lots of Japanese people. Having some proficiency in the Japanese language will help immensely in daily activities like shopping, travelling, visiting a doctor etc. Ritsumeikan University (BKC) is near to Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan. Visiting lake Biwa and catching fish there was a enjoyable experience. I also experienced firsthand Japanese culture like punctuality, cleanliness, systematic garbage disposal etc. Settling in for the first few months can be tough. Balancing study and daily chores sometimes can create pressure, especially during exam time. Living near the university and a supermarket can reduce the pressure in daily life. Obeying the traffic rules is very important, even for riding the bicycle.
I feel myself very fortunate to be taught under some of the finest professors in their respective fields. I enjoyed sharing the cultural and other experiences with classmates from different countries. I thank the Japanese government and the Japanese people for giving me this opportunity of higher study. I thank JICA and JICE for their continuous support. I hope the knowledge and skills acquired here can be used effectively for the development of my country, Bangladesh.

I had a long cherished desire to study abroad in a reputed university of international standard. As I work for Bangladesh Bank, I also needed a degree in Economics for the development of my career. JDS scholarship opened up the opportunity for me to fulfill my desires. I am a 12th batch JDS fellow and I was selected to study Masters Program in Economic Development (MPED) in Ritsumeikan University BKC, Japan in 2013.
At first when I heard the news that I was selected for the scholarship I was delighted and I was also a little worried about my life and study in Japan as I didn’t know much about it. However, after arriving Japan at the warm reception of JICE people I understood my life in Japan is going to be comfortable. It was indeed; from renting house to visiting doctor we always have JICE people by us. In this regard I also would like to thank people from Bangladesh community living in the area of my residence. Ritsumeikan University is a top rated private sector university in Japan and MPED is one of the most prestigious programs of the university. To my mind two most remarkable features of MPED that make it an ideal destination for many students from developing countries are, its multicultural environment and research based design of the MPED program. Besides, Ritsumeikan University BKC has an exquisite campus that is located near Lake Biwa on uphill in the lap of nature. I think, firstly, in such a multicultural environment, I have been able to enrich myself by different cultures, experiences, and stories from different corners of the world and secondly so much importance of the program on research has helped me to get deep insight of the systematic procedures to do a quality research that will definitely help me to contribute to the policy decision for my country through my organization in the future.
In recollecting the wonderful moments of my great journey, it is really difficult for me to make an appropriate list and of its order. I have so many good memories: visiting world famous organizations like Toyota, Toto, Fujitech etc., enjoying cherry blossom and a lot of different Japanese festivals with classmates and teachers, playing pocker in the Casino of Khurshed san, being a mafia in the land of Nargisa san, visiting flee market, celebrating classmates birthday, making takwaki with Japanese friends, having BBQ parties at lake biwa and so on. What a wonderful time I have passed in Japan. I am privileged to be a part of it and very glad spending 2 important years of my life in Japan. Hope these wonderful memories will never fade away and inspire me forever.

How fast time does fly. It seems yesterday I flew for Japan. But two years in japan passed in a wink with a lot of pleasant memories, festivities and stress of studying. I went to Ritsumeikan University at Biwako Kusatsu Campus (BKC). I am always thankful to almighty for providing me the opportunity of studying at such a lovely and esteemed university. The university is very near to Lake Biwa and it is the largest lake in Japan and most beautiful lake I have ever seen. We used to release our pressure and stress by visiting the lake. We never missed the fire works over Lake Biwa in August.
Ritsumeikan University, BKC is adjacent to Kyoto city, a city with long tradition and full of World heritage sites. During the spring the city takes the look of the snow white as the streets, parks and temples are adorned with cherry blossom. The professors from the university took us to tour Kyoto city to enjoy the cherry blossom in spring and in autumn to enjoy the turning the color of the leaves. Another important event one to take part and enjoy in Kyoto city is Gyomu festival. One of the largest processions in Japan is brought out in this festival in Yamashina, near Kyoto city. I am very lucky to study at a university so near to a historical city.
At Ritsumeikan University, I have many international students from the Laos, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam and of the different countries of the Central Asia and of course, the Japanese students. I came to know their culture, the way of their thinking and their problem and prospect. It is like having a class that truly represents the vibrant and diversified Asia with students from poverty prone South Asian country Bangladesh, emerging economy Indonesia and Malaysia and CIS countries. It has broadened my perspective and enabled me to think analytically. Economics department at Ritsumeikan University is manned by excellent and efficient professors from Japan and other countries. University arranges tour to the leading and successful industries like TOTO, Toyota, Panasonic and Fujitec. By the way, Ritsumeikan University and Panasonic are on either side of the same street. Intense guidance and supervision is provided to the students that are extremely helpful to achieve excellence in study. For these, I am very thankful to my professors. My study in Japan has equipped me with skills and knowledge that is sure to help me in nation building.
Studying at a university in Japan was a dream and JDS scholarship opened up path to fulfill my dream. JICE Bangladesh has facilitated me in materializing my dream. JICE Osaka, Japan guided me to complete the dream successfully in entire two years in Japan. It has always been my heart’s desire to study abroad and pursue my Master Degree in Economics. So when I got the JDS scholarship, I was so thankful to God for this rear opportunity. In addition, when I was asked to choose my preferred university, without second thought, my first choice was Ritsumeikan University (RU). The fact that it is an international campus making Ritsumeikan as a multicultural institution where students can meet other race from different countries all over the world. I’m very thankful to Japanese government, JICA, Bangladesh Government and JICE gave me opportunities to study at this university.
I think studying 2 years Master Program in Economic Development (MPED) at RU gives me a wonderful opportunity to improve my knowledge and helps me develop the individual’s adaptability and independence. RU is also one of the prestigious universities in Japan, where students can acquire a lot of knowledge and skills not withstanding their facilities e.g. library. I am really impressed with the way we can immediately look for references, books we need by just accessing the internet. Teachers and students are from all over the world, making RU a splendid multicultural campus where students can be benefited from the accession of different values and ways of thinking. Therefore, in immersing to different cultures, I have a chance to learn new languages and social skills.
Our “Sensei” (faculty) were very kind to impart with us what they know in respective to our subjects. There were many famous professors from Japan and abroad, i.e., from Asia, America and Europe, etc. And classes were organized in a way that students play the major role under the guidance of professors. The faculty staffs here were friendly, hard working, and always waiting for offering help to us.
The university staffs were always cooperative and helpful those make students feel comfortable and learn effectively. The environment was very conducive for learning. Together with academic learning, JDS students have completed the academic life with lots of fun in Japan through Japanese class or workshop.
The scenic view of RU was indeed breathtaking. The campus was big, quiet but pleasant and lovely. Who would ever tire of watching the beautiful trees that surrounds the campus, not forgetting the cherry blossoms? They even said that RU is a university within the forest but I’d like to call it my new paradise.
In a nutshell, I passed my staying in Japan nicely and fruitfully and looking forward to meeting Japan again and again in future.
